Beyond Beehives

The League of Utah Writers is proud to open a call for submissions for our next anthology: Beyond Beehives: Poetry and Prose About the First 125 Years of Utah's Statehood, made possible by the Thrive125 Grant from the Utah Department of Cultural and Community Engagement.

We will be accepting submissions of up to 5,000 words of all genres in the categories of fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry. This call is open to anyone with a story to tell about Utah (League of Utah Writers membership is not required). We are seeking stories from Utah residents and those with a strong connection to the state. We especially want to focus on stories showcasing marginalized groups whose stories are not often told. Writers of all backgrounds and identities are encouraged to submit.

Tell us a story about Utah and its statehood. Tell us a story about what it is like being here. Tell us about Utah’s history or its future. Tell us hidden and unknown stories of folks forgotten by the history books.

To inspire you, we spoke with renowned Utah History teacher and author Quinn Rollins on Saturday, June 26 to take a peek into the history of Utah's statehood, good and bad, to help you generate ideas for your submission.  Watch the lecture here:

Submissions are due by 11:59 pm (MDT) on Wednesday, July 28th. Only one submission per author, so send us your best work. Original submissions only; reprints not accepted.

Selected submissions will be paid .03 cents per word (or a flat rate of $15 for accepted poetry), will receive a print copy of the anthology, and receive a ticket to the Quills Conference, held August 12-15 and hosted by the League of Utah Writers.

The final collection will be published in December 2021.

Submit using the form below. Make sure that you use standard manuscript format for your submission in a .doc or .docx file format in 12 point Times New Roman or Courier New fonts. (Please refer to Shunn’s manuscript guidelines for formatting help)
